Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to question specific rulings made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
