Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
